Last year, the former Mayoress of Gateshead, Frieda Salkeld, contacted Joanne Stewart, activities coordinator at our Ryton Towers home, and together they’ve built a great working relationship bringing the community together.

However, it wasn’t until recently, that Joanne discovered Frieda has a personal connection to Ryton Towers as her mother was formerly a resident between 2004 and 2010. At this time, Frieda’s husband, Alex, worked for Gateshead Social Services and was well aware of the excellent reputation Ryton Towers had for providing quality care. Alex was actively involved in the community and received great positive feedback from outsiders, who had relatives living in Ryton Towers.

Between 2015-2016, Alex and Frieda were elected Mayor and Mayoress of Gateshead. During this time, they raised a staggering £18,500 to go to much needed charities. Although Alex and Frieda ended their duties at the end of 2016, they have still been actively involved in the community.

Ryton Towers are looking forward to the coming months, as we’ve offered Frieda the use of our home. It’ll be put to good use, for coffee mornings and social events promoting our community links, and helping them raise funds for their charities.

Frieda also does a lot of work at the Barmoor Hub, and is in the process of raising money for a spectacular fireworks display in November.
