Dementia friendly environment

Inside our 32 bedroom St Catherine’s home, every part of the journey has been considered, and always with dementia care at the heart of all the decision making. Our home is a heady mix of both form and function, bringing cutting edge research and technology to the fore.

  • In the research and development phase of delivering St Catherine’s, we worked closely with pioneers in the field of dementia, including a world renowned dementia team from the University of Sterling, to make sure that every single aspect of the environment was dementia friendly.

As you enter our home, our wayfinding signage will guide and navigate you and our residents with ease, helping those with dementia move from space to space in a calming, reassuring way.

And each of these spaces provides a safe haven and a real sense of community. Spaces that promote connection with ourself, others and the environment - from our purpose built high tech sensory room and our award winning sensory gardens, to our communal cinema room and interactive market square.

Our home also boasts a full state of the art Circadian lighting system, which has been scientifically proven to improve sleep patterns, moods, engagement and dramatically reduces the risk of falls.

These are just some of the many reasons why St Catherine’s is firmly at the forefront of dementia care.

Spotting early signs of dementia

There are nearly 1 million people with dementia currently in the UK. This is predicted to increase to over 1.6 million by 2050. And that number can be multiplied exponentially with the number of people’s lives that are effected by dementia. Early signs can be easy to miss, but watching out for small symptoms, can help with spotting dementia.

  • The first small signs of dementia are the most important as they could be an indication of something more serious so it’s important for families and carers to be are aware of any small but noticeable changes.

Our friends over at the Alzheimer’s Society have a checklist of dementia symptoms to help identify potential early signs, which will in turn help you when entering into discussion with other family members, your GP or our team over here at St Catherine’s.
